SRB Waxed chains and waxing service

At SRB we have been testing waxed chains for the past two cycling seasons and we are convinced that it is a great method of chain maintenance for the performance-minded cyclist and/or for the cyclist who wants the cleanest drivetrain possible. Is it for everyone? No. Do you need to wax your chain? No, not at all.

That said, waxing your bicycle chain does offer a range of benefits that can enhance your cycling experience. Unlike traditional lubrication methods, a waxed chain provides superior efficiency by reducing friction, which can translate into smoother and quieter rides. It also boasts exceptional longevity, staying cleaner for longer and requiring less frequent maintenance. Waxed chains also repel dirt and debris, helping extend the life of your drivetrain components which can save you money over time.

If you are interested in the world of waxed chains, read on! We provide pre-waxed chains, chain re-waxing and drive train preparation services.

Services & Pricing

New pre-waxed chains: price of chain + 30$

  • We take a new chain of your choice and strip it down to the bare metal using Silca chain stripper. The chain is then waxed using Silca secret chain blend, allowed to set and then prepped for use.
  • We will offer a selection of ready-to-go chains, but if you are looking for something different we are happy to accomodate!

Drivetrain set-up plus waxed chain: price of chain + 90$

  • We ultrasonically clean the chainrings, pulley wheels and cassette. We then take a new chain of your choice and strip it down to the bare metal using Silca chain stripper. The chain is then waxed using Silca secret chain blend, allowed to set, prepped and installed on the bike.

Re-waxing chain: 30$

  • For chains previously waxed by SRB.
  • You bring us the chain, we remove excess contamination using the appropriate method (wipe/immerse/strip) and then the chain is waxed using Silca secret chain blend, allowed to set and then prepped for use.

Maintenance

At the most basic level: a waxed chain must be re-immersed at regular intervals (depending on riding style and weather) or drip wax applied at regular intervals. Waxing is not a 'one and done forever' system.

Our recommendation: purchase two waxed chains and a bottle of super secret drip. Ride the initial chain for ~300km then apply the drip wax as follows:

  • Apply the wax after a ride, you will need to let it sit
  • Put the chain in big/big (big chainring, biggest rear cog)
  • Shake the bottle of lube then apply 1 drop per roller on the lower portion of the chain
  • Back pedal 10x to open the chain/allow wax to penetrate
  • Apply 1 drop per roller on the top portion of the chain
  • Back pedal 10x with the chain on small/small
  • Let sit overnight.

Re-apply the drip wax every 250km (depending on weather and type of riding). At around 1000km of riding, take the chain off and install the fresh chain.

Bring the chain to SRB and we will re-immerse your chain in fresh wax while you repeat the above process with your second chain.

Regardless of the number of chains, submersion vs drip, wax does need to be reapplied to the chain.
